December 3, 2020 by admin Leave a Comment

A structural engineer dallas is the backbone of a construction project. He/she is more concerned with the integrity of structures and design, thus tasked with providing details on the construction site’s activities. Being a structural engineer, it is only right you understand your responsibilities, which include;

Site Investigation

It is the duty of a structural engineer first to inspect the proposed site for construction. The soil condition will determine the foundation system, plus the amount of load that the site can handle without the risk of collapse.

Designing

The primary role of a structural engineer is designing structures. Therefore, they must have rich knowledge of the building materials’ properties and structural forms of support. These include beams, columns, and the foundation to ensure the building’s stability.

A structural engineer must calculate the load on the different building materials. Consequently, he/she should have background knowledge of physics, mathematics, and mechanics.

Managerial Roles

As expected, a structural engineer should take the lead and oversee the construction project. They are in charge of ensuring that the right equipment and materials for the job are purchased and delivered. Also, they interview and hire onsite workers, plus oversee the day to day activities to ensure everyone is working as required.

Communication

Multiple stakeholders are involved in a construction project, including architects, landscape engineers, environmental scientists, and geospatial engineers. It is the role of the structural engineer to ensure smooth coordination amongst involved parties. Plus, it is their responsibility to liaise with everyone and ensures that they are on the same page.

Safety Assessment

A structural engineer should do a safety assessment to help anticipate any safety issues. They check on any force, whether internal or external, that might be a risk to the project, such as; vibration, earthquake temperature, cracks, etc.

Furthermore, they are expected to come up with possible solutions should a problem arise on site. The safety of the workers on site lies under their jurisdiction, and therefore they should ensure they do a perfect job in forewarning any expected trouble.

Investigation on Collapsed Structures

In the event of a building collapse, an investigation team is sent out to determine the cause of collapse to avoid recurrence. A group of construction personnel, including architects, structural engineers, and geotechnical engineers, is sent to the site.

After determining the cause of the collapse, the construction personnel may be found guilty of negligence. From there, it is the responsibility of the court to decide the most suitable punishment.

Maintaining the Structures

Long after completing the project, a structural engineer is expected to inspect the structure regularly. This is to ensure that the facility receives the appropriate maintenance to enhance its serviceability and longevity.

Conclusion

A sound and experienced structural engineer is crucial in ensuring the safety and durability of any construction project. Structural engineers have multiple roles and responsibilities during construction, including onsite inspection and evaluation, team management, and follow-up assessment. Besides, they are sent, alongside other professionals, to the site of a collapsed building to investigate the cause.
